The Opposite House Hosts Norlha Pop-Up Store

(Beijing, 29 January 2015) – The Opposite House is proud to host Norlha pop-up store from 4 February to 8 February. The store is held at the Green Room, located on the lower ground level of the hotel and across from Sureño. The Norlha team would be available to assist with finding guests the perfect scarf, shawl, blanket and more, from 1pm to 9pm.

After years of research on yak fiber, the Norlha workshop was founded in 2007 with a concept of linking sustainability and luxury. One of the company’s aims is to develop the Tibetan plateau economy where residents find it increasingly challenging to make ends meet through pastoral activity alone. Thus founder Kim Yeshi was convinced to train and employ Tibetan nomads on the high plateau to process and transform the fiber from their yaks, combining traditional techniques with more modern technology to create luxurious textiles in an endless varieties and weights, suitable for all seasons.

Yaks are protected from the intense cold temperature by a soft insulating layer of down called khullu, hidden by their long guard hair. Khullu sheds in the spring and these would need to be collected prior to being scattered by the winds. Felting is still commonly practised amongst the nomadic community where items such as clothings, rugs, and tents are made. At present, Norlha is the only company in the world that transforms yak khullu into felt.
